Unlocking passwords

Hi. My brother recently passed away. He was brilliant and was in process of writing a book when he passed. He used passwords, which we do not know. We are desperate to save years of his hard work, please help.

Passwords in Classic operating systems are very different from Mac OS X.

Is an image of a Classic screen.

Mac OS X is a screen such as one of the ones on this link: Change or reset the password of an OS X user account - Apple Support

And then there is Open firmware password: Use a firmware password on your Mac - Apple Support

So which is it, that this thread may be put in the appropriate forum?
